About the Author
Arelia Johnson is a woman who knows and understands how pain promotes promise. At a young age, Arelia knew and understood that there was something, indescribable, pushing her to live, think, and breathe as a unique creature. Growing up in one of Houston's toughest neighborhoods, Arelia quickly learned that every action results in consequences. She watched as family members and friends faced addiction, jail time, and sometimes death. Prior to graduating from high school, Ms. Johnson was awarded a full scholarship to a historically black university, but found her-self married and pregnant before she turned twenty. She dropped out of college, got a divorce, and her life began spiraling out of control. In 2004, a year after the death of her great-grandmother, she decided to enroll at Texas Southern University. Not only did Arelia find her passion, she began to walk into her promise. In 2005, while a member of the Texas Southern University debate team, she won a major international title and started The B.L.O.OM. Foundation, Incorporated. The next year, she began competing as a slam poet in Houston, and was titled the Houston Grand Slam Champion. She released her first album in 2011, created The OWNED Project in 2013, and hosts a weekly internet radio show (www.blogtalkradio.com/theownedproject).

Thick isn't a size... it's a mindset!
By Kentrice Harris
OohMGee! Where do I start?

I read "Thick" in 1 day, it was an easy read for me. I like the format of the book, the questions in the beginning of the book forced me to evaluate the way I see myself in the safety of my home mirror as well as in public. The interviews with the other "Thick" ladies gave me insight and helped me to realize that we as voluptuous women are the majority. Standing Ovation to the author, Arelia Johnson, job well done... please don't make us wake too long for the next book.

Arelia did an excellent job in relating the “raw” responses from survey participants
By Clare B
This book tackles a real issue that so many women struggle with on daily basis. Arelia did an excellent job in relating the “raw” responses from survey participants. I enjoyed reading each participants story without an interpretation from the author. Also, I feel like the short stories and poems depicted real issues demonstrated much creativity and imagination.
This book was very light read.
