About the Author
Nicholas Ayo, C.S.C. teaches theology and literature in the Program of Liberal Studies at the University of Notre Dame. He is the author of The Sermon-Conferences of St. Thomas Aquinas on the Apostles' Creed (1988) and The Creed As Symbol (1989).

Efficient History and Commentary

This elegant and efficient book combines two things too often separated in books on the Lord's Prayer: history of the prayer and commentary on its phrases. Ayo first elaborates on the petitions of the Lord's Prayer and then introduces classic commentary by sources such as Cyprian of Carthage and Teresa of Avila. Ayo concludes by defining the Lord's Prayer as a collect prayer, a recognition prayer, a mystical prayer, an eschatological prayer, and so on--proving that the prayer's brevity does not limit its depth, versatility, and importance in personal and public worship. The organization of the book is not always intuitive, and the selection of sources at times seems random, but this is still a rich resource for this vital prayer.
