A practical book, Neural Smithing is aimed at the reader who intends to design and build neural networks for applications from forecasting to pattern recognition. The authors concentrate on multilayer perceptrons (MLPs) as the most commonly used neural network model, which adds to the book's overall clarity and focus.

This textbook-style reference begins with simple, single-layer networks and the elements of supervised learning. It then builds on these basics with such topics as error surfaces, genetic algorithms, and generalization. Examples and illustrations guide the reader through the discussion, but the authors don't suggest problems for further study--a small omission in an otherwise well-constructed book.

Most handled book on my bookshelf

After owning this book for many years and reaching for it many times, I decided that I at least owed the book a five star review.

Early in my graduate career I began working with neural networks and discovered this book in a electronic bookshelf available at my university. After printing chapter after chapter to read on subway rides home I ended up buying it for convenience. It gave me the background I needed to code up a basic artificial neural network in C++ and to then extend it to fit my needs.

The style of the writing is the perfect balance of enough detail to understand a concept or method without unnecessary wordiness. Each chapter covers an important aspect of neural network development and application - for exmaple, internode weight initilaization techniques - and acts a sort of mini-review of the most popular methods with a clear explanation of the pros and cons of each.

This is an excellent bookshelf addition for anyone who works with neural networks.

This is a fantastic book. It covers a wide variety of topics in neural network programming and construction and breaks everything down quite nicely. It's a majorly complex subject but this book does a great job of explaining things.

Not for the weak of heart

I bought this 9 or 10 years ago when I became interested in AI, but my math skills were pretty weak at the time. I've since completed a CS & math degree, and I find this book easy to read, thoroughly interesting, and insightful.

Many of the questions I found myself asking while I read were soon answered as I read later sections of the book.

For those considering the purchase and unsure whether they can handle it, for much of the book a decent exposure to calculus will suffice. For a few chapters some exposure to ordinary differential equations would be wise. Numerical Analysis is probably a good idea as well.

An exposure to probability & statistics (not the freshman version) would help as well. The section on initialization techniques talks about various probability distributions when determining methods for initializing weights. If you don't care about the why's, it can be used as a reference for coming up with a scheme for weight initialization, but I find it handy to know why my code is doing something so I better know how to tweak it.

surprising delight for Charmed fans

I've read my fair share of spin-off novels in order to get an extra taste of a favorite movie or TV series. You take them with a grain of salt, knowing that they won't exactly be Shakespeare or even up to par with the original work. So, imagine my delight when I picked up this book (the first I've read of the Charmed series), and discovered a very well-written novel that is incredibly faithful to the canon (most delicate of all being the characters and the Charmed universe). Leo (my favorite character) is newly mortal and dealing with Piper's over-protection, when the sisters are kidnapped by a mad scientist. Leo summons his adult sons from the future to help him unravel the mystery and rescue the Charmed Ones. It's a story with enough character and mystery that it could easily have been a strong episode of the series. It could have used more drama and play between Leo, his sons, and Piper. But still, an excellent spin-off. Grade: A-

Awesome!!

I have read all the Charmed books and have seen the episodes many times. I love the books because it still keeps the characters alive even though the tv series is done. I just love to read this book over to pick up on anything I didn't see when I read it before and it is quite funny a little bit when Older Wyatt and Chris come into the book.

This was an amazing series!!

Jace is a decorated Navy SEAL (yummy) with a reality show Inked by Jace. He moves to a small town and across the street is a diner with none other than Kat working there! She's works to support her young son and doesn't need a man like Jace in her life.

The whole series was smoking hot! I loved all the characters! There were twists and turns that will have you glued to whatever means you are reading this series with.

Read and devour each an every one, they are all worth it!!

Kat thought she had it all! A new baby boy and a loving husband! Only one of those was true!......Six months after the birth of her son she catches her husband screwing his young hot secretary!

So after 2 years of battling a nasty divorce and custody of her son Kat meets Jace the new residential damed bad boy in town. Only he is actually an ex Navy SEAL who is still in the reserves who just so happens to be a tattoo artist and owns a motorcycle.

As things progress between the 2 Kat must allow herself to open up and be partial to the idea of loving someone else after all her ex put her through. Dealing with visitation and deployment the couples relationship is put to the test.

Will they survive or will they have to take a back seat??!!

I love this series of novellas! It has hot SEALS! What more could you ask for??!!

As usual KB Winters doesn't disappoint. This series of 5 books is another winner. If you like Navy seals you'll love this series. Sexy, patriotic, hot bodies, drama, suspense, and passion. A well written book with great characters. The chemistry between Navy seal tattoo artist and divorcee waitress Kat was off the charts. You will love this series.

An Excellent Adventure For Kids AND Parents!

Oh, how our family loves this fabulous new adventure story about a boy, his dog, an adorable mouse, and a variety of endearing and frightening critters and creatures in the land of Kibblestan. A stranger in a strange land, Ellis offers assistance to the inhabitants as they take refuge and then plot a revolution against the tyrannical and evil Snotlins. The word choices and adventures are right down my eleven-year-old boy's alley - the author shows a real understanding of what makes kids tick - resulting in a story that even the most reluctant boy will devour within a few days. And as a parent, I was thrilled that the story also serves as a parable about democracy and the great value of our founding documents and recording of history. It is rare to find such a well-written book, packed with action and adventure, that also serves as a teaching tool about our Constitution, Bill of Rights, and founding principles. You know you have discovered a wonderful book when you are battling your 5th grader over whose turn it is to read the book!

Great read for young boys

With lots of adventure and creative creatures, this is a great read for young boys, say ages 8 and up.

Ellis gets in a fight with his dad, runs off, and ends up in a fantasy kingdom that needs his help. There are some interesting parallels to America's founding, but it's very well done and doesn't come across as didactic at all. Some of the story elements are a little on the gross side (the things they can do with unicorn spit...) but I think that will be a big hit with the targeted age group. All in all, a very entertaining read with a great message on the power of family, hard work, and freedom!

Kibblestan is an excellent read for children of this generation. After noting the interest of my 10 year old grandson and his friends, (who are already contemplating the release of Ms Rand's next book), I decided to scan thru the book myself, and was very pleasantly surprised at what I found inside the intriguing cover. The book has a message relevant to our world situation of today, with discussion questions at the end. I would highly recommend this book for children in my grandson's age group.

buy. this. book. period.

First, PLEASE ignore the reviews that are complaining about the lack of detail in this book. This is a companion training guide to THINNER, LEANER AND STRONGER. This book lays out a complete year long training plan and functions as a notebook to log your progress if you like. You should definitely look at THINNER, LEANER AND STRONGER before starting this training plan.

I bought this book for my wife who was looking to change up her workout this year. I had recently read Mike Matthew's book for men and have really been enjoying and finding success with his suggested training program. I loved how simple and straightforward the workouts are. This is all stuff that you should be able to do in an hour at the gym, and there isn't any silly, confusing nonsense. Strength training is really not that complicated. As Matthews explains, so many people are just confused by all of the misguided, contradictory information we're bombarded with.

My wife has been going to the gym fairly regularly for the past few years, but her time there hasn't been very organized or focused. Occasionally she would ask me to write out "something to do" at the gym, and she would do that routine for a while. Its good that she has been going, but at some point you need practical advice and a program like Mike Matthews offers here to really get the most out of your time. i.e. Do these things on this day, this number of times, this many weeks, etc;

I was really impressed by this book. She won't be asking me to write out "something to do at the gym" anytime soon. The day's training plan is written out clearly, page by page here for the entire year. She is set! More importantly, I was happy to see that she read through THINNER LEANER STRONGER and seems to have picked up a better understanding of both WHAT she is doing and WHY she is doing certain things.

Fair warning: I kind of laughed during the first week when she was complaining how tired she was at the end of the day. She couldn't understand it. I had the exact same reaction when I first started Mike's program last year. For a week or so, I was incredibly wiped out at the end of the day. It was very disconcerting because we're both pretty active people and no strangers to the gym. Don't let it slow you down or worry you. My body adjusted and caught up to the new training, and I haven't felt that level of exhaustion since.

I can't recommend this book highly enough. Every day I see people at the gym paying $50/hour to have a personal trainer do goofy, not especially effective exercises. For about $20, you can get the two THINNER, LEANER books, save yourself hundreds of dollars through the year and get way more out of your time at the gym. Be patient, follow the advice here and good luck!

I don't have to plan my workouts now

I'm a wife, mother, and an elementary school teacher. I meal plan, lesson plan, plan appointments...plan, plan, plan. I DON'T want to plan my workouts. In fact, I wasn't working out because it was one more thing I had to think about and plan.

I like Mike Matthews--I've bought his Thinner, Leaner, Stronger book and his cookbook, both on my Kindle. After reading his blog for some time now, I trust what he says. I really like that I don't have to think about structuring my workouts, he's done all the work for me. I'm only 2 weeks in, so I can't comment on how effective it's been for me, but like I said, I trust what he says and I'm sore, so I believe it's doing what it should be doing! Maybe I'll be a "before and after" success story on his blog someday...but I've got to get better at the eating part for that to happen ;)

I went back and forth about taking off a star because it should be spiral-bound. I know sometimes the author doesn't have choices in components of a book--perhaps Mike didn't with this one. Or perhaps it would have made it way more expensive. In the end I am reviewing this based on the content, and the content I feel is five stars. If I were working out in a gym (I work out in our home gym) it would be a different story because it would make the book less user-friendly for me. At home it's not as much a problem.

I have had to come up with alternatives to gym machine exercises he's included. Use bodybuilding.com to look up alternatives. I also use their website to watch the videos to make sure my form is correct.

**EDIT--I've been using this book as my workout plan for 9 weeks now and I LOVE it. I am seeing progress I've never seen before with any plan I've ever done (mostly The Firm and Cathe Friedrich tapes). I didn't start working on the food part until almost a month ago (read his Thinner, Leaner, Stronger book OR go to his website MuscleForLife.com and look up "meal planning") but it all WORKS. I'm tracking my progress in a Google Sheet and my weight/body fat is going down while I'm putting on muscle. My only complaint is that I'm losing time each day from flexing in the mirror, lol! I can't wait to see what happens in the next 2 months.

Best program EVER!!

I'm a little embarrassed to say, but I have been lifting weights for around 20 years (gasp!!) and have not seen any results compared to those I have seen while doing this program for the past 4 weeks. I'm truly amazed that I did not figure any of this out on my own however, so very happy that Michael figured it out and shared it with me!
I took the book in to Kinkos and had it spiral bound so it lays flat while I'm doing my workout and it's easy to write in and keep track of what page I'm on. I don't mind the size of the book at all, I rock that book all over the gym! I am looking forward to this entire year one challenge and find myself excited every day to get in and get it done knowing that no rediculously long cardio awaits me and I have a clear plan of what to do from the moment I walk in to the second I walk out. Talk about motivation to go to the gym!! Way easier to talk yourself out of it when you don't have a plan. I'm in love!! It's so exciting when people see changes in your body and ask what you're doing!

Efficient History and Commentary

This elegant and efficient book combines two things too often separated in books on the Lord's Prayer: history of the prayer and commentary on its phrases. Ayo first elaborates on the petitions of the Lord's Prayer and then introduces classic commentary by sources such as Cyprian of Carthage and Teresa of Avila. Ayo concludes by defining the Lord's Prayer as a collect prayer, a recognition prayer, a mystical prayer, an eschatological prayer, and so on--proving that the prayer's brevity does not limit its depth, versatility, and importance in personal and public worship. The organization of the book is not always intuitive, and the selection of sources at times seems random, but this is still a rich resource for this vital prayer.

About the Author
Mark Q. Sutton began his career in anthropology in 1968.� While still in high school, he took advantage of the opportunity to participate in archaeological excavations conducted by the local Community College. He went on to earn a BA (1972), an MA (1977), and a Ph.D (1987) in anthropology.� He has worked as an archaeologist for the US Air Force, the US Bureau of Land Management, various private consulting firms, and taught at a number of community colleges and universities.� He taught at California State University, Bakersfield from 1987 to 2007 where he retired as Emeritus Professor of Anthropology.� He now works for Statistical Research, Inc. in San Diego.� Dr. Sutton works on understanding hunter-gatherer adaptations to arid environments but has also investigated entomophagy, prehistoric diet and technology, and optimal foraging theory.� Dr. Sutton has worked at more than 120 sites in North America and has published over 160 books, monographs, and papers on archaeology and anthropology.

Preface One of the major goals of this fourth edition was to reorganize and expand the chapter on Contemporary Issues, add some new photos, to correct errors, and to update all of the other materials in the book, particularly the sections on prehistory. The recently published A Prehistory of North America (Sutton 2010) is also organized by culture area and can serve as a companion volume to this edition of Native North America. As with the third edition, an Instructor�s Manual and Test Bank are available to supplement this fourth edition. What�s New in this Edition * revised treatments of prehistory for each culture area * a major reorganization and expansion of Chapter 13, Contemporary Issues * expansion of the section on Governmental Policies * addition of new research findings and updating of existing information

A very dry listing of the various aspects of indians ...

A very dry listing of the various aspects of indians in different areas of North America. It could almost be a large chart comparing the similarities of the indian practices, etc. So far (four chapters) it turns out that the indian's anthropology practices are more alike than different.

This textbook is a good book. I have read it from cover to cover and I was surprised to learn a few things. Sutton was very thorough in his explanations of the Native American cultures.
