After over a century still the best survey of ancient geeography

When the author produced this excellent critical review of the geography of the ancient thinkers and navigators he condensed the multi-volume work by Bunbury of the 1880s and brought it up to date. This edition from 1934 has the additional back end notes by Cary to make this one of the most useful books on the subject and one which does not seem to have been superseded. Romm's The Edge of the World in Ancient Thought should be consulted for some recent scholarship (up to the 1990s) but Romm's book is not as comprehensive as it has a more limited topic.
The book is still quite readable and it puts the literary works of Homer, Hesiod, and Virgil into a broader context. In fact, as Romm suggests and Tozer affirms, ancient geography and cosmography was a form of literature spiced with a few bits of statistical and observational data as could be gathered in that period.

A very intriguing historical read. Would recommend to any academic interested in geography. I plan to use it to plan a curriculum to teach a class in the future.
