About the Author
Steven Zwerling was born and raised in East Flatbush at a time when the Brooklyn Dodgers were still in residence. He went to PS 244, then Brooklyn Technical High School, and after that Columbia where he was an English major. After grad school he taught at Queens College and subsequently became an Assistant Dean at the City University of New York and Associate Dean at New York University. After his first book was published—Second-Best, a history of America’s community colleges—he was recruited by the Ford Foundation where he became Senior Director for Education, Media, Arts, and Culture. In recent years he has contributed to a number of blogs, including the Daily Kos and his own Behind the New York Times, where a number of the stories in Obama, Oy Vey first appeared.

"What a timely and provocative perspective to share during this hectic political campaign! Only a reflective, “progressive” Mom could teach a lifetime of political responsibility through her sensitive, gifted son with the support of his wife..
Mother Zwerling demonstrated throughout her life, the importance of developing genuine human relationships by sharing friendships and commitment to the “struggle”. Now, when so many young people are searching for meaning and authenticity, she teaches us that the “struggle” includes the contributions of all who work toward a “more perfect union”. Democratic societies, she urges, depend upon collaborative action in order to be successful. Mother Zwerling has become a friend to all of us who willingly reflect on her wisdom and life experiences.

The wit and wisdom espoused by these 'golden girls' is a wry tonic for the times. You'll laugh, you'll cry but mostly wish YOU had the author's mom as your own... we should all be so lucky to live this long and have this much love and laughter fill our days. I can't wait for the movie!

Temptation overcomes, and the stick is smuggled to the ice rink inside a huge stuffed giraffe. With the autographed stick, the child scores goal after goal and her team has its best season ever. Meanwhile, Gretzky himself is in a scoring slump. The newspaper says he's lost his stuff. After a sleepless night full of guilty dreams, the protagonist hurries to Madison Square Garden determined to return the magic stick. The hockey pro is so touched by his young fan's generosity that he requests her autograph. A satisfying ending shows the famous stick displayed at the Hockey Hall of Fame. This story is told in humorous rhyme and is accompanied by delightful cartoon illustrations. Even children who have no knowledge of hockey will be entertained by this book and impressed by its message. Maloney and Zekauskas have scored a winning goal with this one.

A child's book that has it all, for my kids and for me!

This book is so enjoyable it really makes me look forward to storytime. The story, based in truth, is one adults can identify with and kids find amusing. The rhyme scheme reminds me of Dr. Suess and the illustrations are first rate. The little girl in the story learns how to help others, in this case the Great Wayne Gretzky, at the expense of her own good fortune. It shows an intact loving family (a rarity in today's culture), shows that little girls can be the star of a story, and can play hockey. If you like hockey, love kids, or remember reading Dr. Suess as a kid, you'll love this book.

This is a great children's book that will also entertain any adult. The book follows a girl and how Wayne Gretzky's hockey stick helps her become the great player on her hockey team. She make a choice to return the stick to Wayne Gretzky to pull him out of his slump. This a great lesson for kids

A real treat for kids and adults

My 2 and 4 year old like hockey and they love this book. We picked it up at the library and were very pleasantly surprised to find such a refreshingly modern book. It is about a family that accidently end up buying Wayne Gretzky's hockey stick at an auction. The daughter plays hockey and the stick helps her to play better. But in the mean time, Wayne Gretzky goes into a slump without it. The girl decides she must return the stick to him. I cannot do the book justice though. It is a rhyming verse book that is so easy to read and there is alot of humor in it, yet it has a nice lesson. My kids have tons of books but they love this one and it is one that I do not get sick of reading. Thank you to the author's for something new and refreshing.

Based on years of experience in teaching object-oriented programming, the book condenses long explanations in favour of providing real examples which show how the concepts are implemented in an object-oriented program. Thus, detailed code examples are liberally interspersed with theoretical descriptions throughout the book. One of the unique features of the book is that it contains five chapters (called “Programming Projects”) which explain how to build a complete object-oriented program based on the material presented in the other chapters. These chapters appear when all the relevant material required for writing the program has been thoroughly discussed in the preceding chapters. Each of the five chapters starts by describing the problem in narrative form. The chapter then gives a detailed definition of the functionality required. Next, the chapter explains how the functionality can be implemented using the object-oriented concepts presented earlier in the book. The chapter ends with a complete working Java program that solves the problem described. Often, alternative solutions are presented so that readers will be aware that there are competing ways to implement an object-oriented program with different trade-offs. Another unique feature of the book is that that new material is not used or referenced before it has been discussed. The book is essentially incremental in nature so that new concepts being introduced always build on earlier concepts. Thus, readers are only exposed to new concepts or language features when pre-requisite material has been completely discussed. Also, great care has been taken to avoid the use of programming language features which, though very useful for advanced programmers, can make it harder for a beginner to focus on and learn the object-oriented principles being imparted. This book is based on the experience gained from many years of teaching object-oriented programming to beginners who know another programming language. It is likely to benefit readers who are looking for a good, practical introduction to object-oriented programming in Java, in an easy-to-understand format.

About the Author
Permanand Mohan is a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science at the St. Augustine campus of University of the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago where he has been teaching full-time for more than 15 years. He has a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of the West Indies, an M.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of Saskatchewan, and a B.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of the West Indies. He was previously a Visiting Professor at the Laboratory for Advanced Research in Intelligent Educational Systems (ARIES) at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada and a Fulbright Visiting Scholar to the School of Information Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh in the USA. Mohan has taught object-oriented programming to hundreds of students over the past ten years. He has also taught courses on computer programming to thousands of students learning to program for the first time. This experience has given him keen insight into the challenges that beginners have when learning new programming concepts. He sought ways to overcome these challenges and developed several strategies that make it easier for a beginner to learn computer programming and object-oriented programming. These strategies focus on simplifying concepts and presenting concrete examples as much as possible. They have been successfully used in his classes over the past few years. These strategies have played in a key role in the organization of the book and in the pedagogical approach taken.

Great for Students or Adults

As a Youth Pastor, I first review books and Bible studies before I give them to my students. This study was very good for my own life and now that I've given it to some of my student leaders, they are growing spiritually.

A few of the things they enjoy are the daily reinforcement of the weekly verse and how it stays fresh in their minds the whole week. The passages they have been reading are familiar, however they did not think of them in light of leadership.

Recommend this study for anyone in leadership or thinking about it.

How to be encouraged to get rid of stuff your don't need.

I've been waiting on this one to come out and I wasn't disappointed! In this wonderful book the author encourages the reader to declutter and organize your home leaving only those things you truly need and love. But the book is not just about getting rid of stuff....it's about having a more relaxed and fulfilling life as a result of it. She writes about a morning routine, the domino effect, creating order and enjoying luxury aka having empty drawers and more cabinet space. If you have "stuff" everywhere and feel totally overwhelmed by it, then this is the book for you!

I wanted a book to help motivate me to de-clutter and get rid of extra stuff I have a hard time parting with.

This book was more about organizing. She talks a lot about buying all sorts of organizing boxes, adding hooks on walls to hang stuff, putting up shelves to put your stuff on, buying a hassock ect. If I were to buy all that organizing stuff, my place would actually be more cluttery. I would much prefer to get rid of stuff than to buy new organizing contraptions to store an ever increasing amount of stuff.

She does have some good ideas for beginners, such as wash your dishes every day, so you don't have a mountain of dishes; and buy a hamper to put your dirty clothes in, so you don't have dirty clothes lying all over the house. So people with really messy places may find some good tips.

She also has good ideas for organizing a household with small children.

For me, "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing" was what I was looking for. It was written by a lifelong Japanese de-cluttering fanatic. Some of her ideas were kooky, and I didn't follow all her ideas; but it really inspired me to donate a bunch of bags to the thrift store.

A book that I really needed!

My first thought is that Melissa writes in a way that I feel she is talking directly to me! I have her book Love The Home You Have and it helped me improve the look and feel of my home so much. I even got comments on how much better it looks! This new book has charged me up to a whole new level. I am so bad about holding on to things that I really don't need. Examples-I remember who gave this to me, I remember how much this cost, I might need this some day. For some reason reading this book has unleashed a purging binge for me. Through Melissa's writing I feel it's finally time and OK to just let stuff go. I've tried other methods before, but this is the one that is really working for me!
