Emotional read

This book is a continuation of the story the Only One Who Knows. Yes, it can be read on its own but I think you’ll get more out of it if you read the other book first. That being said, I started this book and read it from beginning to end; I simply could not put it down. The Only One Who Matters was phenomenal; the writing was sharp, the plot compelling, and the characters rich and deep.

Following a mission that almost took his life ex-SEAL David Flint is dealing with being a civilian, rehabilitating his leg, and trying to figure out where he belongs in the life of his partner Lieutenant Commander Josh Walker as he leaves for one deployment after another. Living together has brought them closer but with Josh’s constant deployments their relationship is starting to feel the strain.

I found it so interesting that David, an ex-SEAL, had just as hard a time if not more so with his lover deploying as the wives, mothers, and significant others of the rest of the SEAL team. I love that this book was written this way because it shows that no one is immune to the worry, the hardship, and the issues that arise when a loved one is gone. There was a strain between these two men; one that they knew was there but they just didn’t know how to fix as communication is not one of their strengths.

With Josh and the team gone, David finds himself helping out one of the wives from the team and it was entertaining to see a very different side of this large, in charge, and complex man. We saw a different side of Josh as he led his men and made decisions that affected them all. It was great to see that he was capable of being the man and leader David saw in him when they first met.
So much happens in this book but I don’t want to give anything away so I’ll just say this is a complex story with a lot of surprises, some good and some bad. The Only One Who Matters isn’t a pretty story; these are two guys who have a hard time sharing their feelings, communicating their needs and letting anyone help, but there’s no doubt they belong together and are in it for the long haul.

Just as good, if not better, than the first.

I absolutely loved the first book in this series and fell in love with Josh and Flint right from the get go. They faced quite a few challenges back then, and that has not lessened any this time around.

Now, Flint, or David as he is now a civilian, is having a lot of trouble coming to grips with the ending of his SEAL career and acclimating to his new life. He is at a bit of a loss as he recuperates from his injury and tries to figure out what he will do with his life. Added to this is the fact that Josh is still enlisted and going on dangerous assignments. David has never been on this end of things, stuck at home and waiting for any news of his loved one, yet knowing full well what Josh faces while deployed. This is really starting to take a toll on their relationship, of which they are both aware. Unfortunately, Josh is not home long enough for them to really do anything about it, so things just sort of sit in limbo until he returns.

In the meantime, David is adjusting, with the help of a team member’s family. They have kind of adopted each other, with David stepping in to help with the kids and pregnant wife while that team member is deployed. It was fun watching David struggle a bit with being around the kids and having to step up to the plate to care for them. I liked watching his comfort level grow little by little as they became more and more important for them. It also really helped David to understand and share the emotions as they commiserated over their deployed partners.

Josh does quite a bit of growing up in this book. Even though they still struggle with communication issues, they are both aware there are issues that must be addressed. I was really pulling for these guys to get through things, especially when Josh finally returns and has to deal with PTSD issues on top of everything else. For some reason, this installment felt so real to me, with the problems they each faced from different sides of the fence. I felt so much for each of them for different reasons and was hanging on for them to really join together and be there for each other. It is clear how much they love and mean to each other even when things aren’t going perfectly for them. This book especially gives you a real sense of some of what military families go through every day.

I love this writing team and they quickly became an auto read for me. While I do really enjoy both on their own, when working together, it is like a double whammy. The stories are solid and well written, pulling various emotions from me in the process. When I begin reading, no sooner am I starting that I find myself at the end and longing for more. This book was no exception. I hope this isn’t the last we will see of David and Josh, but, either way, I know I’ll be excited for where ever the next adventure will take us.

A sweet and emotional tale of two SEALs--one current, and one retired due to an injury. I enjoyed their journey as they figured out how to deal with separations and fears together.

Really a great story. For it being the 2nd in the series, it stood alone very well which is a testament to the good writing of the authors. Unlike other Riptide books I’ve read that were rife with poor or seemingly no editing, this one was spot on which was a relief.

Lots of content - but very wordy and reader unfriendly

I had adopted this book to teach Distributed Systems to a senior level undergrad class. I think I may have made a mistake, not knowing before hand how hard it would be for me to read this book (despite having some background in distributed systems). The students constantly complained of it being too "Wordy" and "vague". Few generic figures and mostly all text that seemed to be a rehash of several IEEE/ACM papers without giving sufficient examples or explanation. Some times, the authors did indeed explain some concepts with examples. At other times, they just left the concepts in vague mathematical notation or arcane definitions expecting the readers to make sense of it. While the english is grammatically correct, it is written in such a stuffy academic style that I found myself having to read most paragraphs twice or thrice before I could figure out what the author was trying to say. At times, I was thinking the authors should have been lawyers instead. (If the authors are reading this .. please consider the maxim: A picture is indeed worth a thousand words). A side note: I am not averse to reading academic papers. I do that all day long. But I just don't think a textbook should be written in that style.

On the pro side: This book has lots of content related to distributed systems - and that was one of the reasons I adopted it. However, what's the point if that content is unreadable? My recommendation would be other books such as Tanenbaums Distributed Systems book (it has lesser content, but more readable and suited for undergraduate level).

I give it high marks for the good content, but very low marks for the style of narration and presentation.

It's alright...

The best review I can give for this book is this: it's OK.

It's not terribly thorough, but it's easy to read. You're going to need some supplementary publications in order to fill in the gaps it leaves or just to answer the questions you will probably have popping up in your head.

I'd recommend reading this before anything else, though. All the other books are so immensely difficult to actually force yourself through that this provides a great "starter" so you're better prepared for what everyone else is going to throw at you.

About the Author
PATRICIA GUCCI was born in London and educated in England, Italy, and Switzerland before moving to New York to study acting. In 1982 she was appointed to the board of Gucci and roving ambassador in the United States and Asia until the company's sale to Investcorp in 1987. She has three daughters and lives in Switzerland.

Fascinating book, very readable, truth is always stranger than fiction

In the Name of Gucci is a heartfelt recounting of several lives and one iconic business through the lens of Patricia Gucci, the daughter of the family-firm Gucci's powerhouse behind the company's growth into an international luxury goods firm, Aldo Gucci.

Aldo Gucci's daughter by his second wife, Patricia is now a mature woman with a mature understanding of human nature, and is informed by her mother's strong memories. The author sets out to do three things: to honor her father, to honor her mother, and:

"to give my children a unique and truthful memento"

There are some omissions to spare feelings, and to avoid lawsuits, no doubt, and there is spin on things that could be viewed from a very different, unsympathetic perspective. If you set those things aside, the book is highly readable, often fascinating, fluidly written, and gives the reader a close-up view of people who filled the newspapers for decades. That many members of the Gucci clan would not be out of place in a recent book about psychopaths in boardrooms, makes the book compelling reading.

The spinning in the book generally relates to 53 year-old Aldo Gucci's sexual harassment of a 20 year-old employee. What makes the egotistical assault by the old-man-with-an-infatuation on the young woman most damning is that the young woman was very immature, and emotionally and psychologically weak and vulnerable. Hounded into a relationship with a married man old enough to be her grandfather, left the fragile woman scared for life. She is the author's long-suffering mother.

Other spinning in the book involves the disgusting wealth that went to the Gucci family from their luxury goods business, rather than to their employees or the tax authorities, to the former for their hard work and long hours and having to put up with the vicious abusive tantrums of the company's owners, and to the latter what was their due by law. The conspicuous consumption, of especially the 1980s, turned this reader's stomach.

If you are someone who prefers non-fiction reading to fiction reading, like me, you'll enjoy every word in the book. Truth is stranger than fiction, and the truth of the Gucci family is especially strange. I received a review-copy of this book. This is my honest review. Beautifully written, it speaks to men

A deeply personal account of the patriarch behind the brand history and the author's own childhood in the company's heyday in the 70s & 80s. Beautifully written, it speaks to men, women and children whose actions have gone unheard. The book restores one's faith in humanity on so many levels - tenderness, tolerance, generosity, magnanimity - by underscoring both the presence and the absence of such virtues in the characters that inhabit the house of Gucci.

This is an interesting autobiography by Gucci's daughter Patricia. She's had quite a life. Her mother was a stunningly beautiful woman also. It was so well written, I didn't want to finish it.
