After twenty plus years of renovating and remodeling old houses in England and the USA, Philip Bryce moved to Thailand in 2004. With his Thai wife, Philip designed and managed the building of his own house in Ko Phangan. That experience was the basis for the first edition of this book. Subsequently, Philip and his wife have established a highly successful building project management company and have build six houses over the last three years. Philip continues to update this book as he strives to build the perfect Thai house.

Don't Build Home Without It!

Well written, and quite valuable. Very detailed as the topic is technical, yet also readable. VERY useful information it would take a while to find yourself. I would have liked to have some of the information in front of me before I purchased land there. As for building, its very local specific, for Thailand, and some region specific info also. Thats a good thing....

I'd say "Dont Build Home Without It," to play on the AmEx slogan (not that I have any fondness for those corporates....:). I wont. Many of the details here you will likely be faced with at some point, in a relatively complex place (land ownership, etc). The experiences (and knowledge) of others is an invaluable gift. It helps if you can also write, which he can.

Highly recommended, as is his other book (with Thai co-author), Retiring in Thailand. If you plan to do this also, it will save you (and will me) a lot of pain and frustration, I am sure. Also very detailed yet readable. In my experience (Belize, Panama) its some of the best of the genre. Unqualified 5 stars, as is this book. Thanks, Phillip....!

Excellent book on Building a House in Thailand!

Mr Puterbach's polemic against "How to Buy Land and Build a House in Thailand"

has almost NOTHING to do with the book he pretends to be reviewing.

Yes, "stuff" happens everywhere, all the time. But if you are dumb

enough to put your newly built house in the name of a nearly broke single mother

you just met in a bar, you are likely not bright enough to be building

a house on your own in another country to begin with!

Having said that, I found Mr Bryce's an EXCELLENT book on the pros and

cons, the risks and rewards of building a house in Thailand.

I personally found his experience and information invaluable, and would

STRONGLY recommend you not even consider building a house in Thailand without reading this book first!

There are indeed many complexities involved,and this book is the easiest

way thru the challenges you will indeed encounter.

You CANNOT legally own land in Thailand

I don't care what hoops you go through, what companies you set up, or any other amount of subterfuge you may try.

FOREIGNERS CANNOT OWN LAND IN THAILAND. That is the law, it's as simple as that. And more to the point, Thailand's legendary instability means that even if you have "protected yourself" they can change the goalposts in a heartbeat.

This book should have a massive disclaimer at the beginning reminding people of this simple fact.

Lease by all means; at least if the Thais decide to screw foreigners (which they do with monotonous regularity), you have less to lose.

And there are so many nice properties, especially in the North, this is probably the way to go (especially if you are retiring there).

This is not being negative, I visit Thailand regularly, but you cannot gloss over this simple fact of law and pretend the risk is not there.

Excellent Introduction to Node and Express

This is the best book on Node and Express I've come across as well as one of the best technical books I've encountered in general.

I tried reading a few other books on the subject, and couldn't get past the first few chapters. The general spirit of all other books has been: "I just figured out this thing called Node, and now I'll share my scant understanding of the subject by following a useless example with excruciating detail while addressing few practical issues."

By contrast, this book goes something like this: "Here are some common problems in web development. Here are some good solutions. Here's why these are good solutions. Here's how to implement these solutions using Node and Express." The book also follows an example but with just enough detail to illustrate the issues, and detailed discussions of the relevant concepts--not the example--are the focus.

The author has a wealth of web development experience and covers most topics on building a useful web application. Unlike with other sources, I've been able to find concise, practical answers to questions I had about starting to use Node and Express in my projects.

Intro to Practical Modern Web Development

From this book, I learned not just about how to write a basic Express app and make it nicely modular, but also learned from the enthusiastic author's wealth of knowledge and opinions about web development in general, including how to: provide security in a sane way (3rd party authentication, secure cookies, https, secure hosting and domain registration, etc.); make QA and deployment easier, simpler, and more trustworthy; plan for multi-year maintainability; and understand asynchronous javascript methods.

No knowledge of NodeJS is necessary -- I had none and was able to follow along and make my own little app. I would also estimate that (a lot) more space was used in this book covering web development in general than Node and Express in particular.

Provides good information, bad code examples

I've been working along with the examples in this book and, while the book is informative, many of the examples don't work. This is problematic as future exercises rely on prior ones. In many cases this may simply be progress outpacing publishing: many of the examples use older or now obsolete versions of libraries or tools, not to be unexpected with relatively new technology. I've noted these problems on this book's O'Reilly errata page as descriptively as possible, as have many other readers.

Other than the problems with the code examples, this book does offer a good conceptual framework for developing for the Web using these technologies. I hope future versions work out the code example issues.
