These chapters appear when all the relevant material required for writing the program has been thoroughly discussed in the preceding chapters. Each of the five chapters starts by describing the problem in narrative form. The chapter then gives a detailed definition of the functionality required. Next, the chapter explains how the functionality can be implemented using the object-oriented concepts presented earlier in the book. The chapter ends with a complete working Java program that solves the problem described. Often, alternative solutions are presented so that readers will be aware that there are competing ways to implement an object-oriented program with different trade-offs. Another unique feature of the book is that that new material is not used or referenced before it has been discussed. The book is essentially incremental in nature so that new concepts being introduced always build on earlier concepts. Thus, readers are only exposed to new concepts or language features when pre-requisite material has been completely discussed. Also, great care has been taken to avoid the use of programming language features which, though very useful for advanced programmers, can make it harder for a beginner to focus on and learn the object-oriented principles being imparted. This book is based on the experience gained from many years of teaching object-oriented programming to beginners who know another programming language. It is likely to benefit readers who are looking for a good, practical introduction to object-oriented programming in Java, in an easy-to-understand format.

About the Author
Permanand Mohan is a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science at the St. Augustine campus of University of the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago where he has been teaching full-time for more than 15 years. He has a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of the West Indies, an M.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of Saskatchewan, and a B.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of the West Indies. He was previously a Visiting Professor at the Laboratory for Advanced Research in Intelligent Educational Systems (ARIES) at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada and a Fulbright Visiting Scholar to the School of Information Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh in the USA. Mohan has taught object-oriented programming to hundreds of students over the past ten years. He has also taught courses on computer programming to thousands of students learning to program for the first time. This experience has given him keen insight into the challenges that beginners have when learning new programming concepts. He sought ways to overcome these challenges and developed several strategies that make it easier for a beginner to learn computer programming and object-oriented programming. These strategies focus on simplifying concepts and presenting concrete examples as much as possible. They have been successfully used in his classes over the past few years. These strategies have played in a key role in the organization of the book and in the pedagogical approach taken.

Great for Students or Adults

As a Youth Pastor, I first review books and Bible studies before I give them to my students. This study was very good for my own life and now that I've given it to some of my student leaders, they are growing spiritually.

A few of the things they enjoy are the daily reinforcement of the weekly verse and how it stays fresh in their minds the whole week. The passages they have been reading are familiar, however they did not think of them in light of leadership.

Recommend this study for anyone in leadership or thinking about it.

I had a huge interest to know and learn about binary options trading and for the sake of this reason last few months I was searching a suitable guidebook. Last week my elder cousin told me about the quality of this book and suggested me to read it entirely. I didn’t forget to grab this book after hearing from her and this book didn’t disappoint me.

Inside of this book the author “David Nelson” has described all the essential things about binary options trading step by step. Throughout this book I have come to know about the different types of binary options, best trading times and lengths of my goals. This book introduced me with some effective tools and guided me about how to use those tools. I am really glad to read this such a helpful book and thankful to the author as well.

We all want to have a good experience with the latest binary options for sure. But to ensure that we could generate an income, we have to be informed on everything from packaging logistics to legal know-how. The author discusses the essentials of retail arbitrage which is in details that even a newbie like me can relate to it. The author also highlighted the importance of registering a business and deal with tax issues so we could avoid legal problems as we go our way through this business. He also talks about strategies and unbeatable plan that should be put into action to make sure that everything will work out as planned. It's totally informative for me and even thinking of venturing to this business the soonest. Thanks for the trip.

This guidebook is perfect for the beginners. I have heard about Binary Options Trading but did not have a very clear idea on what exactly it is. Anyways thanks to this handy guide now I have a clear picture about the trade as a beginner. This has got almost everything you need to start. And very specially the tips and tricks I'm really going to practice. I recommend this guide to anyone who hates going to work and would like to earn while staying at home. Recommended

How to be encouraged to get rid of stuff your don't need.

I've been waiting on this one to come out and I wasn't disappointed! In this wonderful book the author encourages the reader to declutter and organize your home leaving only those things you truly need and love. But the book is not just about getting rid of stuff....it's about having a more relaxed and fulfilling life as a result of it. She writes about a morning routine, the domino effect, creating order and enjoying luxury aka having empty drawers and more cabinet space. If you have "stuff" everywhere and feel totally overwhelmed by it, then this is the book for you!

Good ideas for a household with small children, and for people with very messy homes.

I wanted a book to help motivate me to de-clutter and get rid of extra stuff I have a hard time parting with.

This book was more about organizing. She talks a lot about buying all sorts of organizing boxes, adding hooks on walls to hang stuff, putting up shelves to put your stuff on, buying a hassock ect. If I were to buy all that organizing stuff, my place would actually be more cluttery. I would much prefer to get rid of stuff than to buy new organizing contraptions to store an ever increasing amount of stuff.

She does have some good ideas for beginners, such as wash your dishes every day, so you don't have a mountain of dishes; and buy a hamper to put your dirty clothes in, so you don't have dirty clothes lying all over the house. So people with really messy places may find some good tips.

She also has good ideas for organizing a household with small children.

For me, "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing" was what I was looking for. It was written by a lifelong Japanese de-cluttering fanatic. Some of her ideas were kooky, and I didn't follow all her ideas; but it really inspired me to donate a bunch of bags to the thrift store.

A book that I really needed!

My first thought is that Melissa writes in a way that I feel she is talking directly to me! I have her book Love The Home You Have and it helped me improve the look and feel of my home so much. I even got comments on how much better it looks! This new book has charged me up to a whole new level. I am so bad about holding on to things that I really don't need. Examples-I remember who gave this to me, I remember how much this cost, I might need this some day. For some reason reading this book has unleashed a purging binge for me. Through Melissa's writing I feel it's finally time and OK to just let stuff go. I've tried other methods before, but this is the one that is really working for me!

Great in Theory, Not Even Remotely Practical ...

I am an actual professor. So, know that this review is from someone who tackles with issues of advising in a college setting. Now, here's where the text goes wildly wrong ... it is simply not practical. Whether one is teaching at a small liberal arts college or an overcrowded state university, the suggestions in this text (while well intended) are deeply impractical and painfully antiquated. Even at a small school, a professor's day is consumed with teaching, grading, standard office hours, service to the college (search committees, class observations, etc.), checking in on clubs, and scholarship. (Professors at state universities have even less time, often dealing with excruciating bureaucracy ... trust me, I've done it). The scenarios presented in this text are extraordinarily time-consuming. I would have students lined-up at my door if I adopted this approach. For instance, if a student is struggling in a class, the first and last stop is with that professor. That professor can suggest strategies for improvement, resources available to the student, or (in some cases) a remedial class (if a student is profoundly deficient). Typically, professors (especially at large universities) are not aware of all resources made available by all departments. Sure, students can seek solace in me about repeatedly failing calc II (I do feel for their situation), but the fact is the matter is that I'm not the person with whom they need to be speaking. Hence, some of these "I'm Okay, You're Okay" suggestions need to be ditched in the 1960s, to say the least. With a lobby of students waiting for the secretary to buzz them back to my office, it is not fair to them or to me to offer half-hour "feel good" sessions ... questions like "instead of focusing on this failure right now, where are things going right?" do not provide genuine help to anyone. "Disarming" and "discovering" as the text so succinct states (buzz words are fun, right?) equate to "frustrated students staring at my secretary" and "feeling accomplashed for two seconds, but still leaving with the same issue." It needs to be perfectly clear that professors do not have degrees in psychology and exist as ACADEMIC advisers merely to assist students in selecting the correct or best courses for their future career. It's really that simple. Likewise, we are not there to hold the hands of enraged students who are unable to meet the goals and expectations of the college. So, having a "pow-wow" about "Let's think about why this class may be required for your major" is not an option. I can just tell students, for example, "As a future high school teacher, you need this class in diversity since you will work with a wide group of students ... all of whom deserve your respect and compassion." So, the student does not needlessly have to brainstorm on the "why." I'll tell them why ... and then we will move on to the actual solutions.

I have taught at a very small, semi-exclusive college for twelve years now. The methods presented in this text will not be effective here (nor would they be supported by senior faculty and administration). And, if they do not work here (where my advisees are few and talented), I can promise you that they will absolutely not work at large, overtaxed universities (where students must often advise themselves since actual advisement is a signature on a sheet or a pin-code taped to a door ... and, yes, I have friends and colleagues in this position as professors).

Excellent Resource!

This authoritative text presents an extensive academic and theoretical foundation for academic advising best practices. While some of the information, though based on research, seems very obvious, the references are thorough and easy to locate. Also featured are various "scenarios." I found these to be the most helpful aspect of the text. They are depicted in charts and guide the advising process using clear and specific language and practice. There is also a chapter on "Socratic Advising" that provides relevant and straightforward models. I have not seen this model presented as clearly in any other text. All in all, this is an excellent resource and reference book for any advising office or for any new adviser. Since both community college and university authors are represented, this is a comprehensive text.

He is currently a lecturer at the Department of Pharmaceutics, Biopharmacy and Biotechnology at the FU Berlin, working on new biotech drugs from natural sources and on the development of drug delivery carriers based on nanosuspension and solid lipid nanoparticle enterprise technologies.


Prof. Dr. Heribert Warzecha
Studied Pharmazie at the Johannes Gutenberg-Universitat, Mainz. After completing his Ph.D. in 1998, he worked first as a postdoctoral fellow at Cornell, USA, and become associate Professor in wurzburg in 2001. Since 2007 he is full Professor at the technical university of Darmstadt and became dean of the Institute of plant science in 2009.

This text is really more of a collection of review articles authored by different persons collected together in chapters and edited by the authors. I think it's good for what it is and someone with more background may rate it better than I did, but purchasers should know that this really isn't an introductory text. I was hoping for an "updated to 2013" introductory text that would include more basic explanations of techniques like PCR and explanations of the newer jargon at a level for someone with a M.S. in chemistry who took a biochemistry course in school 20 years ago and only remembers the basic DNA to RNA to protein pathway, cell organelles, basic structure of a virus etc. I think I'll have to find a different text of that type before I read this one. I'd be grateful for any suggestions.

Written with wit and featuring a few fine plot twists, this will have teen girls nodding sympathetically. There's also a strong subplot centered on a newspaper article Jen and an African American friend are writing about the school's de facto segregation, which adds some heft to the oldest story in the world. Jennifer had the perfect boyfriend, the All-American Boy, Max Brown, who she has had a crush on since kindergarten. Everything was fine and peachy for them, or at least that is what Jennifer believed. Out of nowhere Max tells her that he has been thinking about this a lot and just ends their relationships. Heartbroken, Jennifer has no idea what went wrong and is having trouble seeking out the answers, most likely because all she can do is cry in her room.

Jennifer's grandmother believes that the only way she can get over the relationship is by reading The Breakup Bible, the pink book with a golden heart torn in the middle, written by Dr. Emory Emerson. At first Jennifer is still too shaken up about the relationship that she can't even think of her ex's five faults (step one of The Breakup Bible). Jennifer is too busy thinking that Max has figured out that he has made the hugest mistake by breaking up with her. She constantly wonders about this when Max seems to be sending mixed signals to her in their journalism class.

But as Jennifer begins to see that thinking about Max may not be the healthiest thing for her, she takes Dr. Emerson's book and starts using the ten commandments, from trying to not talk bad about your ex to getting a new hobby. But little does Jennifer know that the changes that occur aren't only because of the book--and that the perfect boyfriend she once had isn't so perfect after all.

THE BREAKUP BIBLE is funny, sad, and very sassy all rolled up into one. Melissa Kantor tells the story of Jennifer, who everyone will soon grow to love and cheer for, hoping that she gets together with just the right guy. Not only Jennifer, but also her Nana and mother, makes the story even better. Teen angst never looked so good until THE BREAKUP BIBLE. I say that it is in need of a sequel.

Not Broken Up About Finishing It

This book was so so for me. As far as YA books go, this was not the best. I had a hard time with the main character pining for Max the entire novel. Also, difficult for me was two teens drinking Sangria at a restaurant. Come on. They're teens for crying out loud. And they were served alcohol at a restaurant? Although the book wasn't terrible, I would not put it on my list of books to recommend.

The Breakup Bible

This book was great. Truly great. I've read Melissa Kantor's other two novels, Confessions of a Not-It Girl and If I Have A Wicked Stepmother, Where's My Prince? and I think this book is just as great as those. It shows one girl, Jenny, and her troubles with getting over her first love. After all, he was such a great guy.

I won't spoil the ending, but let me tell you, it's probably the best that I could have asked for. Perfect in the way only a novel can be. I would definitely recommend anything by Melissa Kantor, just because she writes some of my favorite books.
