Legend says that one Ranger is all it takes to put down lawlessness and restore the peace—one riot, one Ranger. In this adventure-filled memoir, Joaquin Jackson recalls what it was like to be the Ranger who responded when riots threatened, violence erupted, and criminals needed to be brought to justice across a wide swath of the Texas-Mexico border from 1966 to 1993.

Jackson has dramatic stories to tell. Defying all stereotypes, he was the one Ranger who ensured a fair election—and an overwhelming win for La Raza Unida party candidates—in Zavala County in 1972. He followed legendary Ranger Captain Alfred Y. Allee Sr. into a shootout at the Carrizo Springs jail that ended a prison revolt—and left him with nightmares. He captured "The See More Kid," an elusive horse thief and burglar who left clean dishes and swept floors in the houses he robbed. He investigated the 1988 shootings in Big Bend's Colorado Canyon and tried to understand the motives of the Mexican teenagers who terrorized three river rafters and killed one. He even helped train Afghan mujahedin warriors to fight the Soviet Union.

Jackson's tenure in the Texas Rangers began when older Rangers still believed that law need not get in the way of maintaining order, and concluded as younger Rangers were turning to computer technology to help solve crimes. Though he insists, "I am only one Ranger. There was only one story that belonged to me," his story is part of the larger story of the Texas Rangers becoming a modern law enforcement agency that serves all the people of the state. It's a story that's as interesting as any of the legends. And yet, Jackson's story confirms the legends, too. With just over a hundred Texas Rangers to cover a state with 267,399 square miles, any one may become the one Ranger who, like Joaquin Jackson in Zavala County in 1972, stops one riot.

This book was recommended by my brother who lives in west Texas, and it sure didn't disappoint!! Interesting read in great detail about the career of this extraordinary Texas ranger who helped keep Texas safe. We need more like him now!!!

Was curious about Joaquin Jackson after seeing a story on Facebook. This book didn't disappoint . I think he was probably born 100 years too late. He is exactly what one would expect a Texas Ranger to be. Sad that he has recently passed away. Enjoyed the book and I highly recommend it.

Good introduction to immunology for those with limited time.

Basic Concepts in Immunology was extremely valuable in allowing me to learn the essentials of immunology in a very short period of time. The material was well organized with many figures to help with explanations. By its nature, the depth of information is limited but now I have a good foundation to learn more in greater depth from other sources. The index was not quite as comprehensive as I would have liked, but the book is short enough to easily find what you need. For immunology novices, I highly recommend reading this book before delving into a detailed textbook.

Best series for listening and note-taking and presentation skills for intermediate level

I use Lecture Ready 2 for an Intermediate level oral communication class. The class focuses on listening and note-taking skills, academic discussion skills, and presentation skills. This textbook covers all 3 focuses, which is rare to find in a textbook. I have used Contemporary Topics from Longman and Listening and Notetaking Skills from Cengage, and I think Lecture Ready is better than the others. First, it has videos of Lectures. Second, it has vocabulary and strategy building. It covers both listening strategies and note-taking strategies. For the presentation skills, each unit covers a specific area of giving a presentation and presents a short video clip of someone giving a bad presentation and then you see a clip of a good presentation. The topics are the typical academic topics: language, media, business, food, etc. They aren't as interesting as the other textbooks but still decent. The best thing about the series is the audio and video for all excercises is free and online! You don't have to buy an expensive CD or DVD like the other two textbooks.

If you order your textbooks through Oxford, you get access to a series of assessments for your class. Sounds good, right? Well, the assessments through Oxford are useless and not worth working with their inefficient and incompetent customer service and shipping departments. The assessments don't always include a lecture for each unit, and if they do have a lecture they are only about 2 minutes long. If there is no lecture, you get a student giving a presentation instead. You are better off having your students buy the books through amazon.

I highly, highly recommend this series as the best of a very small number of choices that are out there for a teacher.

About the Author
Dr. Rehkopf is the Senior Researcher at Plasan Carbon Composites, the leading Tier 1 producer of carbon fiber composites for the U.S. automotive industry. Working out of Tennessee at their facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and out of Wixom, MI in their Customer Development Center, she leads Plasan's research in carbon fiber composite constituents and constructions, focused on commercialization. Dr. Rehkopf is a Civil Engineer with Bachelor's and PhD degrees from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. She has spent her career working in the field of mechanics of materials. Prior to joining Plasan she worked in research at Ford Motor Co. and as a consultant at Exponent, a failure analysis consulting firm.
