The Innovators: The Engineering Pioneers who Transformed America, by David P. Billington

A richly illustrated introduction to the engineering triumphs that made America modern

In this age of microchips and deep space probes, it's hard to imagine life before electricity or passenger trains. An astonishing series of engineering innovations paved the way to the twentieth century, and transformed America into the world's mightiest industrial power. The Innovators tells the exciting story of the engineering pioneers whose discoveries so dramatically altered commerce, industry, and world history. The book takes readers into the workshops of America's early engineering geniuses, explaining how they came up with their ideas and later applied them in the marketplace. Devotees of history and technology will appreciate the finely drawn profiles of America's technical wizards, from the famous--including Robert Fulton, the inventor of the steamboat; Samuel F.B. Morse, the inventor of the telegraph; and Thomas Edison, inventor of the first electrical power network--to the lesser known, such as J. Edgar Thompson, who built the Pennsylvania Railroad.

* From the author of the critically acclaimed The Tower and the Bridge
* Features over 80 illustrations of the engineers and their inventions

DAVID P. BILLINGTON (Princeton, New Jersey), a professor of civil engineering at Princeton University, is the author of The Tower and the Bridge, and Robert Maillart's Bridges: The Art of Engineering, which won the 1979 Dexter Prize as the outstanding book on the history of technology.

Amazon.com Review
In a world rocked constantly by an almost overwhelming string of technological wonders, it's easy to lose sight of the 18th- and 19th-century engineering breakthroughs that set the stage for today's scientific and electronic advances. In The Innovators: The Engineering Pioneers Who Made America Modern, David P. Billington presents a series of intriguing profiles of such pacesetters as Robert Fulton, Thomas Edison, and Samuel Morse, whose inventions are responsible for so many of the developments we currently enjoy.

From the Publisher
Written from an engineering perspective, this fascinating book emphasizes the innovations that were truly basic to U.S. industrialization. The author uses a three-sided view to describe American engineering history: what great engineers actually did, the political and economic conditions within which they worked, and the influence that these designers and their achievements had on the nation. Billington explores the scientific basis of engineering through elementary formulas that also include the social issues of regulated loads, visually striking forms, acceptable risks, environmental issues, and the production of wealth.

From the Inside Flap
The Innovators They built the future. Their ingenuity, their vision, their genius propelled a young nation toward the twentieth century, and paved the way for America’s emergence as the world’s leading industrial power. The Innovators tells the impressive story of the engineering pioneers whose designs revolutionized commerce, industry, and world history. Enter the workshops of America’s early engineering geniuses and discover how they came up with their ideas and applied them to the marketplace. David Billington, acclaimed author of The Tower and the Bridge, reveals the strokes of brilliance behind such landmark developments as the steamboat, electric power, and the rise of the iron and steel industry. He explains each major innovation through the story of the remarkable new engineering formulas that made it possible, showing that one key to engineering progress is the discovery of fundamental relationships in the physical world. He also explores the political and social conditions that allowed these brilliant individuals to implement their ideas, and the sweeping changes that followed in their wake. Who were the innovators? Some are legendary: Robert Fulton, inventor of the steamboat; Samuel Morse, inventor of the telegraph; and Thomas Edison, inventor of the incandescent lightbulb. Others are not as well known, however, and readers will be introduced to many whose contributions, if not their names, have stood the test of time: people like J. Edgar Thompson, who built the Pennsylvania Railroad; and Thomas Telford, who revolutionized large-scale bridge building and design. In the age of microchips and space probes, The Innovators brings insight and perspective to America’s engineering history.

neatly sketched vignettes of inventive engineers
By G W Thielman
Professor Billington presents a neatly sketched vignettes of engineering pioneers in America. The book is well illustrated and the engineering calculations readily accessible to the lay reader. My interest while reading _The_Innovators_ was rather uneven -- some chapters seemed far more engaging than others, but this may have been a consequence of greater familiarity with some technologies compared to others. Nonetheless, the short biographies put human faces behind many of the technical innovations we take for granted today. Too much contemporary reporting focuses on either political intrigues or scandal. As Jean Henri Fabre observed "history records the names of royal bastards, but cannot tell us the origin of wheat." _The_Innovators_, by contrast, presents a compact distillation of modern engineering that would benefit the technically trained and the lay public alike.

not quite as good as the sequel
By Mike Garrison
This book is part of a planned series on the history of engineering in the United States. As such it's pretty remarkable for just existing. Most people seem to think that engineering is just application of formulas, and that anybody with a calculator would come out with the same answer to any particular engineering problem. Billington attempts to show that this is not so, and that certain key engineers have essentially created the modern world of today.

However, this book (planned to be the first of four) is not as readable as book two (Power Speed And Form). I think the problem can be demonstrated in the section about steel. In order to describe steel, he first goes back to the process of creating pig iron, then describes wrought iron, and finally the Bessemer process for steel. Then he highlights Andrew Carnegie for taking the Bessemer process and turning steel into a commodity (that he mostly controlled).

This is just a much more disjointed story than, for instance, the story of the invention of the telephone or the airplane in the second book. Even though this book is called "The Innovators", very few of the people he highlights made the kind of individual breakthroughs that the Wright Brothers made.

Perhaps this book should have been called "The Adaptors", as it really was mostly about engineers in the US adapting technologies pioneered in England and taking them well beyond what the English had done.

This reads like a college textbook -- informative, detailed, and something most people will not read unless it is on a required reading list. In contrast, the second book read more like something from The History Channel, with more of a purpose of making it enjoyable to read as well as being just as informational.

Just friends.
We’re just friends.
No, really. She’s just my best friend...

Arizona Turner has been my best friend since fourth grade, even when we “hated” each other. We’ve been there for one another through first kisses, first “times,” and we’ve been each other’s constant when good relationships turned bad. (We even went to colleges that were minutes away from each other…)

Throughout the years, and despite what anyone says, we’ve never crossed the line.

Never thought about it.
Never wanted to.

Until one night changed everything.
At least, it should’ve ...

Just friends.
We’re just friends.
I’m only saying this until I figure out if she’s still “just” my best friend…

Good Story, Likeable Characters
By Happy Girl
* WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD*
I really like friends to lovers stories. This book kept me interested from the beginning. This is a story about Arizona (Ari) and Carter, who met when they were in the third grade. They hated each other at first, but soon became best friends. They told each other everything from crushes to first sexual experience, etc. The thought of entering into a romantic relationship with each other has never crossed their mind until one night at a party. The author never truly explained what caused the change in feelings between these two. It just happened. There was mild resistance between Arizona and Carter to consummate anything at first and I did enjoy the mild sexual tension they had with each other. From that point on, the story seemed to be rushed. Nothing else really happened in the story. They spent a lot of time hiding their relationship from their friends and getting in bed. Then there's the typical fight that separates them for awhile before they are reunited once again. And then the book ends abruptly. The author kind of left me hanging there. Will there be a Book 2? There should have at least been an epilogue to let the readers know what happened to the characters. Also, the secondary characters were pretty unlikeable. I really didn't like Carter's roommate, Josh. I also didn't like the girl Ari hangs out with. I would have given it 4 stars, but because of the abrupt ending and no likable secondary characters, I gave it 3.

Book is great! Audio book is good.
By Michelle@Book Briefs
4.5/5

I don’t listen to nearly enough audio books. I should listen to more. Most of my hold up is that 1) I will not love the narrator. (more on that later) and 2) that they will not read fast enough for me. I am a fast reader. And I have to say that both of my reservations were realized, but they were fixable. I never knew that with audible you can speed up the listening speed. That helped A LOT. The other reason is unavoidable, but it didn’t bother me as much as I thought it would. My audio book takeaway is that I absolutely want to listen to more books. especially in the car. That is time well spent on long driving trips.

Sincerely, Carter is the first in a new adult romance series by the same name by author Whitney G. I really, really loved the story. It was a best friends to lovers trope and that one always warms my heart and makes me smile. The book itself gets very close to 5 big favorite stars, but the audio version of it detracted a bit from the story. I really liked the narrator for Arizona, but the voice for Carter just did not match up at all for me. Not to mention in the Arizona chapters, if Carter had a speaking role it wasn’t Carter’s narrator doing the voice, it was Arizona in a “guy voice”, and that bugged me even more. I see Carter as this strong male character and his voice just didn’t live up to that for me. The narrator did a good job, it just wasn’t how I pictured Carter in my head. Other than that, the story was excellent. I really loved it. I didn’t realize that this was going to be a series, but I am beyond thrilled that it is.

Carter and Arizona have been the very best of friends since 4th (or 5th) grade. And they have never once crossed the line. (until the events of this story) It is something that confounds everyone they meet. I loved watching them see each other in a new light. I didn’t think it felt rushed or unexpected. I thought it felt really natural actually. Each one of the characters annoyed me exactly once, and it was at the end of the book. Arizona annoyed me a ton more than Carter. I wanted to slap her for acting so petty. I know that she was hurt but come on! She knew exactly what she was getting into, and the way she acted was way meaner than anything Carter could have said or done. (that’s just my two cents though.)

Bottom line: if you are a fan of the friends to lovers trope, Sincerely, Carter is a MUST READ for you. It is one of the best in this story line that I have ever read. Although, I would probably suggest the book over the audio book. (sorry Carter narrator!) I loved this story, right down to every last letter they sent each other. It was sincerely very cute! (I know that doesn’t really work, but I am forcing it anyway.)

4 "I've loved you since the 4th grade" Stars!
By BJ's Reviews
4 "I've loved you since the 4th grade" Stars! Is it possible to have a strictly platonic best friend relationship with someone of the opposite sex? Carter and Arizona thought they might just be the only BFFs to truly stake claim to that title, until one fateful summer caused them to question everything they thought they knew. Why is it that sometimes when it comes to love, the ones in it, are the last to know? But could such an earth shattering change be the beginning of something better or the end of something they would sacrifice it all to protect?

Carter and Arizona have known each other since the fourth grade. Granted, when they first met, they despised each other. But a meeting of the minds over two equally spiteful "apology" letters was the beginning to a friendship that evolved over the years into one of the strongest, most unbreakable bonds.

As boyfriends and girlfriends and other major life changing events came and went, the one thing Carter and Arizona could always rely on, was each other. Perhaps that's, in part, why Carter never seemed to keep a relationship for more than six months and Arizona always seemed to lose her boyfriends when she never felt quite ready to take their physical relationship to the next step.

Everyone always assumed there was some correlation between their failures in the love arena and the strength between their friendship, except Carter and Arizona. Then one drunken induced evening, they broke the seal and ventured where they never envisioned exploring before, introducing all sorts of uncertainty. Of course they are just friends", right?

Fantastically written with flashbacks to the past mixed in with the present, as well as, a view to both the hero's and heroine's perspective, Whitney G perfectly captures the magic of true friendship and manages to impart entertaining humor, as well as dynamic chemistry into the whole equation. What a pleasant surprise this "secret" book turned out to be. Very different from from my prior reads by Whitney G (ie, Reasonable Doubt), but yet enjoyable in a totally different way. I can't wait to continue exploring more of Whitney G's creative ventures in the future!
